In dieser Masterclass zu ihrem Film LIVING ON THE THRESHOLD geben MARINE CHESNAIS und VINCENT BRUNO Einsicht in den Prozess rund um die Entstehung dieses aussergewöhnlichen Dokumentar – Tanzfilms, der die Unterwasserbegegnung mit Walfischen hautnah miterleben lässt: Von den ersten Überlegungen über den Austausch mit den Wissenschaftler:innen, die Besonderheiten eines Unterwasserdrehs bis hin zum erlebten Abenteuer und den anschliessenden Abschnitten zur Umsetzung, erläutern sie an an Hand folgender Fragen die Meilensteine auf dem Weg zum Resultat:
– Ist es möglich, Tanz in einer natürlichen Umgebung zu filmen, ohne die Natur als Ressource oder nur als Kulisse zu benutzen?
– Wie können wir eine Beziehung zur Tier- oder Pflanzenwelt herstellen und sichtbar machen?
– Kann die Annäherung des tanzenden Körpers eine andere Art des Seins in Beziehung zu dem, was uns umgibt, sichtbar und spürbar machen?
– Kann ein Tanzfilm ein militant ökologischer Ansatz sein?
VINCENT BRUNO
Nach zehn Jahren Arbeit in der audiovisuellen Industrie, in denen er bei mehreren Dokumentar- und Kurzfilmen Regie führte, beschloss Vincent Bruno 2013, neue berufliche Abenteuer zu wagen, die ihn für eine Weile vom Kino und aus Frankreich Land weg führten. Er war ‘freediving instructor’ auf Bali und gründete dann in Dubai eine Marke für Naturparfums. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Europa im Jahr 2019 beschloss er, zum Dokumentarfilm zurückzukehren.
MARINE CHESNAIS
lebt auf der kleinen Insel Groix, im Morbihan (Bretagne). Fasziniert vom Meer und unserer Beziehung zur Natur, widmet sie ihre Arbeit der Sensibilisierung für die Art und Weise, wie wir die Welt bewohnen. In dem Bestreben, ein Bewusstsein für die Erhaltung der Natur zu schaffen, gründete Marine 2017 die Kompanie ONE BREATH, die zu einer kulturellen Ökologie – Plattform werden soll, auf der sie das Konzept des bio-inspirierten Tanzes entwickelt. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft ist der Kern der DNA dieser Kompanie.
Über den Film LIVING ON THE THRESHOLD (HABITER LE SEUIL)
Marine Chesnais ist Tänzerin und Choreografin und stammt aus einer Familie von Seefahrern und Navigatoren. Im Juli 2020 beschloss sie, auf die Insel Reunion im Indischen Ozean zu fahren, um Buckelwale zu treffen. Ihre Erfahrung mit dem grossen Blau öffnete eine Schwelle, einen Raum der Entdeckung des Anderen und der Wiederentdeckung des Eigenen. Ihr hypnotischer, bio – inspirierter Tanz, der mit angehaltenem Atem gedreht wurde, hinterfragt unsere Art, das Leben zu leben.

In this masterclass on their film LIVING ON THE THRESHOLD, MARINE CHESNAIS and VINCENT BRUNO will give an insight into the process surrounding the making of this extraordinary documentary – dance film, which allows the audience to experience the underwater encounter with whales up close: From the first considerations to the exchange with the scientists, the peculiarities of an underwater shooting to the adventure experienced and the subsequent sections on the realisation, they share insights of the milestones on the way to the result on the basis of the following questions:
– Is it possible to film dance in a natural environment without using nature as a resource or only as a backdrop?
– How can we establish a relationship with the animal or plant world and make it visible?
– Can the approach of the dancing body make visible and tangible another way of being in relation to what surrounds us?
– Can a dance film be a militantly ecological approach?
VINCENT BRUNO
After ten years working in the audiovisual industry, directing several documentaries and short films, Vincent Bruno decided in 2013 to venture into new professional adventures that took him away from cinema and France for a while. He was a ‘freediving instructor’ in Bali and then founded a natural perfume brand in Dubai. After returning to Europe in 2019, he decided to return to documentary filmmaking.
MARINE CHESNAIS
lives on the small island of Groix, in Morbihan (Brittany). Fascinated by the sea and our relationship with nature, she dedicates her work to raising awareness of the way we inhabit the world. In 2017, in an effort to create awareness for the conservation of nature, Marine founded the company ONE BREATH, which aims to become a cultural ecology platform where she develops the concept of bio-inspired dance. Collaboration between art and science is at the core of this company’s DNA.
About the film LIVING ON THE THRESHOLD (HABITER LE SEUIL)
Marine Chesnais is a dancer and choreographer who comes from a family of sailors and navigators. In July 2020, she decided to go to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean to meet humpback whales. Her experience with the great blue opened a threshold, a space of discovery of the other and rediscovery of the self. Her hypnotic, bio-inspired dance, shot with bated breath, questions our way of living life.

DANCE ON SCREEN versteht sich als Plattform und möchte mit dem Masterclass – Angebot zur Entwicklung und Festigung des Genres beitragen und Film- und Tanzschaffenden die Möglichkeiten bieten ihre Kompetenzen zuzuspitzen, ihr Netzwerk und ihr Arbeitsfeld auszuweiten und potenzielle Kollaborationen anzustossen.
Die Teilnahme an einer DOS-Masterclass beinhaltet jeweils auch den Besuch des laufenden DANCE ON SCREEN – Filmprogramms.

DANCE ON SCREEN sees itself as a platform and wants to contribute to the development and consolidation of the genre and offer film and dance makers the opportunity to sharpen their skills, expand their network and their field of work and initiate potential collaborations.
