Mediating between the internal and external, four women share the beauty, difficulty and immediacy of being present in the world. Co-commissioned by Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and filmed in Iceland, Mother Melancholia is a strikingly and hauntingly beautiful film, a multi-layered collage set to a soundtrack for the end of the world.

Vier Frauen, die zwischen dem Inneren und dem Äusseren vermitteln, teilen die Schönheit, Schwierigkeit und Unmittelbarkeit auf der Welt anwesend zu sein. Der vom Tanztheater Wuppertal – Pina Bausch mit in Auftrag gegebene und in Island gedrehte Film Mother Melancholia ist auffallend und eindringlich schön, eine vielschichtige Collage zu einem Soundtrack der das Ende der Welt einläutet.

Marine Chesnais is a dancer and choreographer that comes from a family of sailors and navigators. In July 2020, she decided to go to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean to meet humpback whales. Her experience of the big blue, opened a threshold, a space of discovery of the other and a rediscovery of oneself. Her hypnotic bio-inspired dance, shot on breath-hold, questions our way of inhabiting life.

Marine Chesnais ist Tänzerin und Choreografin und stammt aus einer Familie von Seefahrern und Navigatoren. Im Juli 2020 beschloss sie, auf die Insel Reunion im Indischen Ozean zu fahren, um Buckelwale zu treffen. Ihre Erfahrung mit dem grossen Blau öffnete eine Schwelle, einen Raum der Entdeckung des Anderen und der Wiederentdeckung des Eigenen. Ihr hypnotischer, bio-inspirierter Tanz, der mit angehaltenem Atem gedreht wurde, hinterfragt unsere Art, das Leben zu leben.

Schlittschuhlaufen ist ursprünglich auf gefrorenen Gewässern entstanden. Vier professionelle Eiskunstläufer:innen, die es gewohnt sind auf perfekt gepflegtem Kunsteis zu gleiten, kehren zu diesem Ursprung zurück. Dieses Naturerlebnis, verbunden mit der Entdeckung und Erschaffung des zeitgenössischen Eislaufs, bildet den Kern dieses Films. Er soll auch die Neugier und Faszination für das Natureis wecken und zeigen, was wir durch den Klimawandel allmählich zu verlieren im Begriff sind.

ENGLISH
Ice skating originated on frozen waters. – Four professional figure skaters, used to gliding only on perfectly groomed artificial ice, return to this origin. This experience of nature, combined with the discovery and creation of contemporary ice skating, forms the core of this film. It also aims to arouse curiosity and fascination for natural ice and show what we are gradually losing due to climate change.

At the end of the film program, Q&A’s with dance filmmakers, choreographers, curators or producers are taking place, moderated by Andrea Boll (Artistic Director DANCE ON SCREEN).
