Physical Culture frames rave as a vital human practice in the information age. It invites us to explore physical movement, to discover who we are when we dance and why we do so. It asks universal existential questions and puts them in a refreshingly queer, playful package. It’s rave, it’s queer, and it’s for everyone!

Physical Culture stellt Rave als eine lebenswichtige menschliche Praxis im Informationszeitalter dar. Der Film lädt ein, körperliche Bewegung zu erforschen und beim Tanzen zu entdecken, wer wir sind und warum wir das tanzen. Universelle existenzielle Fragen verpackt in ein erfrischend seltsames-spielerisches Paket. Es ist Rave, es ist queer, und es ist für alle!

The film showcases the ongoing exploration of contemporary dance and skating as two artists blend their art forms. The result is an unique movement cycle.

Inspired by the city of Rotterdam, the circus trio Knot on Hands create and reshape situations and connections in the everyday life of the city. Fast transports, big buildings and people walking the street become materials in their effort to depict how it’s like to move with, instead of through, the city.

Inspiriert von der Stadt Rotterdam, kreiert und gestaltet das Zirkustrio Knot on Hands Situationen und Verbindungen im Alltag der Stadt neu. Schnelle Verkehrsmittel, grosse Gebäude und Menschen auf der Strasse werden zu Materialien in ihrem Bemühen, zu zeigen, wie es ist, sich mit der Stadt zu bewegen, anstatt durch sie hindurch.

ENGLISH
An ode of gratitude to designer Mirjam Manusama’s roots, Woven Stories follows the process of how inner-world experience, self-liberation and healing manifest into something as tangible as clothing. A group of dancers showcases how past, present and future merge into her craft.

Woven Stories ist eine Ode der Dankbarkeit an die Wurzeln der Designerin Mirjam Manusama und zeigt, wie sich innere Erfahrungen, Selbstbefreiung und Heilung in etwas so Greifbares wie Kleidung manifestieren. Eine Gruppe von Tänzer*innen zeigt, wie Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft in ihrem Handwerk verschmelzen.

ENGLISH
In the beginning, there was a complete nothing: a nothing in which nothing existed.
The smallest particle, a cell, a grain of sand. Merging, crystallizing, forming shapes.
When light and dark intermingled, who could fathom the being and becoming?
And when to be seen was only a swath of fog swirling, a wide horizon became apparent.
A first breath, endlessly recurring, gave its weight to the waves, and against the wind. The continuity of duplication and division, forming life in tenderness and timeless trust.

DEUTSCH
Am Anfang gab es ein völliges Nichts: ein Nichts, in dem nichts existierte. Das kleinste Teilchen, eine Zelle, ein Sandkorn. Es verschmolz, kristallisierte, bildete Formen. Als Licht und Dunkelheit sich vermischten, wer konnte da das Sein und Werden ergründen?  Und wenn nur noch eine Nebelschwade zu sehen war, wurde ein weiter Horizont sichtbar. Ein erster Atemzug, endlos wiederkehrend, gab den Wellen und dem Wind sein Gewicht. Die Kontinuität von Verdoppelung und Teilung, die das Leben in Zärtlichkeit und zeitlosem Vertrauen formt.

ENGLISH
The dancers move in imaginary and special spaces of modern architecture. As they navigate through different emotional states such as sensuality, search, outburst, tenderness and intimacy, they immerse themselves in encounters, secrets, strength and fragility and in the desire for emotional connection.

Die Tänzer*innen bewegen sich in imaginären und besonderen Räumen der modernen Architektur. Während sie durch verschiedene emotionale Zustände wie Sinnlichkeit, Suche, Ausbruch, Zärtlichkeit und Intimität navigieren, tauchen sie ein in Begegnungen, Geheimnisse, Stärke und Zerbrechlichkeit und in den Wunsch nach emotionaler Verbindung.

Laughter, fear and fascination: the acrobat-showmen of the circus company La Volte serve us a cocktail of emotions.
