WHY WE FIGHT?
When we run out of words, the body takes over. Dancers Berengrere Bodin, Samir M’Kirech and TK Russell agree thus far, when asked: why are we fighting? Based on their personal experiences, they search for the why’s of the surrounding violence in the world, but also the violence within them. How do you deal with fear, frustration and disappointment in today’s world, where you are not heard or understood? Is it even possible to act in a non-violent way? Or is that privilege reserved for those who create dance, music, art or words?

In Why We Fight? Choreographer Alain Platel and director Mirjam Devriendt pay tribute to the arts and to humanity, which always seems to balance between creating something spectacularly beautiful and something horribly cruel. The film is inspired by a scene from the dance performance Nicht Schlafen that Alain Platel made in 2016 with the company les ballets C de la B, in a set by visual artist Berlinde De Bruyckere.

The film does not provide an unequivocal answer to the question of why we are fighting. It does show how a complex set of individual psychological, social, political and religious factors causes constant outbreaks of violence throughout human history.

Using various types of film and image material, as well as visual metaphors, the film analyzes social change, the lack of emotional processing and the strength of humanity. Various historians, philosophers, artists and writers, including Berlinde De Bruyckere, Tinneke Beeckman and Koert Debeuf, will have their say.

Despite the pessimistic signs we see on the world front today, the creators urge us never to lose hope! Or as writer and historian Phillip Blom puts it in the film: “We don’t have the luxury of giving up!”.

Wenn uns die Worte ausgehen, übernimmt der Körper die Führung. Die Tänzer Berengrere Bodin, Samir M’Kirech und TK Russell sind sich soweit einig, wenn sie gefragt werden: Warum kämpfen wir? Ausgehend von ihren persönlichen Erfahrungen suchen sie nach den Gründen für die Gewalt in der Welt, aber auch für die Gewalt in ihnen selbst. Wie geht man mit Angst, Frustration und Enttäuschung in der heutigen Welt um, in der man nicht gehört oder verstanden wird? Ist es überhaupt möglich, gewaltfrei zu handeln? Oder ist dieses Privileg nur denjenigen vorbehalten, die Tanz, Musik, Kunst oder Worte schaffen?

In Why We Fight? zollen der Choreograf Alain Platel und die Regisseurin Mirjam Devriendt den Künsten und der Menschheit Tribut, die immer zwischen dem Schaffen von etwas spektakulär Schönem und etwas furchtbar Grausamem zu balancieren scheint. Der Film ist inspiriert von einer Szene aus der Tanzperformance Nicht Schlafen, die Alain Platel 2016 mit der Compagnie les ballets C de la B in einem Bühnenbild der bildenden Künstlerin Berlinde De Bruyckere realisiert hat.

Der Film gibt keine eindeutige Antwort auf die Frage, warum wir kämpfen. Er zeigt jedoch, wie ein komplexes Geflecht individueller psychologischer, sozialer, politischer und religiöser Faktoren zu ständigen Gewaltausbrüchen in der Geschichte der Menschheit führt.

Anhand verschiedener Arten von Film- und Bildmaterial sowie visueller Metaphern analysiert der Film den sozialen Wandel, die fehlende emotionale Verarbeitung und die Stärke der Menschheit. Verschiedene Historiker, Philosophen, Künstler*innen und Schriftsteller*innen, darunter Berlinde De Bruyckere, Tinneke Beeckman und Koert Debeuf, kommen zu Wort.

Trotz der pessimistischen Anzeichen, die wir heute an der Weltfront sehen, fordern uns die Macher*innen auf, niemals die Hoffnung zu verlieren! Oder wie es der Schriftsteller und Historiker Phillip Blom im Film ausdrückt: “Wir können uns nicht den Luxus leisten, aufzugeben!”.

Laurence Yadi and Nicolas Cantillon from the Geneva-based dance company 7273 embark on a journey to post-revolutionary Cairo. They immerse themselves in the world of “tarab”, the Arabic term for ecstasy caused by music. In their attempt to transform the oriental music concept into an occidental dance performance, they are confronted with numerous challenges.

Laurence Yadi und Nicolas Cantillon von der Genfer Tanzkompanie 7273 begeben sich auf eine Recherche ins postrevolutionäre Kairo. Sie tauchen in die Welt des «tarab» ein, dem arabischen Ausdruck für die durch Musik hervorgerufene Ekstase. Bei ihrem Versuch, das orientalische Musikkonzept in eine okzidentale Tanzperformance zu verwandeln, werden sie mit zahlreichen Herausforderungen konfrontiert.
